The invention relates to a five-phase synchronous motor with flat airgaps, and consequently a high-current machine with high-speed rotor (a multiple of the mains-synchronous revolution speed), and a current converter to form individual drive pulses. The motor is equipped with three main elements having the same diameter: the two heavy field spiders (N and S) made of heat-treated cast steel, on a common flux-conducting shaft (Ft), and the stationary ring armature (A), which is wound from iron strip with the DC excitation winder (G) fastened therein. All the pole pieces (Pn; Ps) of one field spider (N; S) have the same polarity. Winding ends, divided into five phases and labelled with the letters S-Y-N-O-R, are fitted in the radial slots of the ring armature (A). For restricted demands, a mechanical current converter is provided. This has a stationary synchroniser ring and a rotating switch element having sliding contacts. The fully-electronic pulse formation ensures reliable drive with very high precision. On the edge of a synchronously running timing disc, contactless transmission elements which indirectly drive semiconductor switches are fixed. Peak rotational speeds occur as a result of the reduced time constant of the air-cored armature disc (in the form of a flat winding), resting in the airgap of the two field spiders. The rectified mains current is chopped by switching transistors or thyristors into overlapped drive pulses ... Original abstract incomplete.
