The invention relates to a method for the production of flat components in which a metal sheet is deformed using a press which has a ram and a die consisting of a top part and a bottom part. The object on which the invention is based is to produce high-quality flat parts from a metal sheet by deformation in an economical and operationally reliable manner. The invention consists essentially in that the metal sheet is placed in the die and the die is closed by means of the ram, in that the ram is locked with the aid of wedges guided in the press frame and a circumferential sealing ring is simultaneously formed in the metal sheet to be deformed, and in that, finally, the metal sheet is subjected in the die to a hydroforming process, the forces acting on the tool and on the press due to the hydroforming pressure being compensated with the aid of the hydroforming hydraulics. The advantages obtained consist above all in that when the method is used the widest possible variety of components can be formed with precision starting from sheet metal. Tooling costs for conversion to different types of components are low. There is also no problem in using sheets of very different quality, e.g. normal deep-drawing steel and austenitic and ferritic stainless steel.
