The introduction device serves for transporting unbound book blocks consisting of individual sheets or layers guided out of a preceding machine, for example an assembling machine, into a following machine, for example a flexible binding machine, with a transfer system between preceding machine and the introduction device of the following machine, the introduction device consisting of an endless rotationally driven conveying chain with driver strips articulated thereon, of a support which supports the upright book blocks in the back, and of lateral guides. In order to ensure problem-free transporting of book blocks from the preceding machine into the following machine while maintaining the alignment of the sheets or layers of a book block with further increase in capacity, there is provided in the inlet region of the introduction device (3) of the following machine a conveying arrangement (10) which takes the upright book blocks (1) over from the transfer system (4) and transports them on and which can be driven at a lower speed in relation to the driver strips (6) of the introduction device (3). <IMAGE>
