PURPOSE:To absorb the variation of the torque of a prime mover by directly coupling a rotary electric machine with the prime mover and operating the whole as a generator or a motor in response to the magnitude of the torque of the prime mover. CONSTITUTION:An output from a crank angle sensor 19 installed to a prime mover is input to a controller 18 and differentiated, thus computing rotational speed. The controller 18 controls the ignition timing of switching elements (a)-(f) so that an AC generator 10 is operated as a motor at timing when rotational speed is made larger than the mean rotational speed of an engine and so that the AC generator 10 is worked as a generator at timing when rotational speed is made smaller than the mean rotational speed of the engine. Reception from the AC generator 10 or feed to the AC generator 10 is conducted by a battery 16 through a capacitor 15.
