PURPOSE: To attain curing at <=200 deg.C and to form a uniform alignment layer for a nematic liq. crystal as well as for a smectic liq. crystal by using substd. arom. polyamide contg. specified structural units as a polymer. CONSTITUTION: Substd. arom. polyamide contg. structural units represented by formula I is used as a polymer forming an alignment layer. In the formula I, E is a group represented by formula II [where each of R1 and R2 is H, 1-6C alkyl or 1-6C alkoxy and at least one of them contains a tert. C atom and is preferably C(CH3 )3 ] and G is a group represented by formula III [where each of R3 -R6 is CH3 , CF3 , OCH3 , F, Cl, Br or H and X is O, C(CH3 )2 , C(CF3 )2 , SO2 , etc.]. |
