摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain an optical recording medium capable of performing high speed density recording and excellent in long-term recording stability by holding a recording material in the pit or groove formed to the surface of a substrate and using fatty acid or a fatty acid derivative as the recording material and providing a metal layer between the surface of the substrate and the recording material and providing a protective layer to the surface of the recording material. CONSTITUTION:In an optical recording medium, for example, grooves are provided to a substrate 10 and a metal layer 9 functioning as a photothermal conversion layer and a reflecting layer is provided thereon and a recording material 7 composed of fatty acid or a fatty acid derivative whose optical properties such as reflectivity or transmissivity are changed upon the application of heat is held in the pits or grooves covered with the metal layer and a protective layer 8 is provided thereon. Light such as laser 12 is condensed to the photothermal conversion layer by a lens 11 on the side of the substrate to heat said layer and the temp. of a recording material is raised to change the light previousness of the recording material. When the recording material is irradiated with sufficiently weak light, the light applied to the recording material held to a high light previous state is large in the quantity of reflected light and the light applied to the recording material held to a low light previous state is low in the quantity of reflected light and, therefore, a written signal can be read.
