PURPOSE:To detect the abnormal feed with high precision by installing an average value data comparing means which compares a standard data and the average value of the transmission light quantity through paper and judges the kind of the paper and/or the abnormal feed. CONSTITUTION:The average value of the transmission light quantity through paper which is detected by a light receiving means 18 at each prescribed time is calculated and memorized by an average value calculating and memorizing means 51. Then, a standard data calculating and memorizing means 52 calculates and memorizes a standard data on the basis of the memorized average value of the transmission quantity through paper immediately before the paper to be judged. The average value and the standard data are compared by an average value data comparing means 53, and the kind and/or the abnormal feed such as double feed are judged for a variety of paper sheets.
