The invention resides in a process and a composition for recovering coal from raw coal which comprises subjecting the raw coal, in the form of an aqueous slurry or pulp, to a flotation process in the presence of a frother which comprises the reaction product of an aliphatic alcohol having from 4 to 6 carbon atoms, preferably 6 carbon atoms and from 1 to 5 moles of propylene oxide, butylene oxide or mixtures thereof.
