A phosphor for emission of light under low-velocity electron excitation having the formula: (Zn1-X,Cdx)S:aLi,bMI,cX (I) wherein 0/=0, c>0, MI is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Na, K, Ag, Rb, Cs, Au and Cu, and X is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Cl, Br and I.
