CONSTITUTION:The damping force of shock absorbers 20 to 26 provided to the suspensions for respective wheels 12 to 16 is made to be capable of being freely changed over from high to low or reversely by means of actuators 28 to 34 respectively. And, to respective suspensions, suspension springs 36 to 42 are provided, and the spring constant thereof is made to be capable of being freely changed over from high to low or reversely by controlling each of electromagnetic open/close valves 44 to 50. When these actuators 28 to 34 and electromagnetic open/close valves 44 to 50 are controlled by a controller 58, an average height is calculated, and when the deviation of the present height from the average height is greater than a prescribed value, the stiffness characteristic of the suspension is changed over to the stiff side for a prescribed time, and also when the vehicle speed is low, the follow-up performance in the average height of the present height is controlled so as to be increased to a higher side than that at the high speed.
