The invention relates to an enhancement to diskettes and hard disks for the purpose of facilitating their protection against pirating, lack of confidentiality and viruses. These diskettes or hard disks are linked up, permanently or temporarily, with modules M consisting of integrated circuits 15, microprocessor, read-only or random-access memories, and connectors 14 allowing communication between this module and the central unit. Modifications to be made to diskettes and hard disks in order to receive these modules, so as to be usable without or with module, are also described.
