This device includes a covering canvas sheet 3, an end edge of which is attached to a rotary rolling-up roller 7, 8. This roller is set up to move in one direction and in the other over the surface 1 to be covered over in order to unroll the canvas cover 3 over the latter or to remove it therefrom. To this end, this roller 7, 8 includes one or more drive motors 9 each carried by a ballasted support 10 which is itself fastened and suspended below an axial spindle 11 about which the roller is able to turn freely. The output shaft of each of these motors is coupled to a gear 18 having inner toothing which is carried by the inner wall of the rotary roller 7, 8. This device can be used to protect a games surface from the rain or to cover over any other desired surface. <IMAGE>
