<p>A method and apparatus as described for forming an optic fibre with a narrowly tapered end portion and a smoothly rounded tip. A predetermined tension load is applied to the fibre, a middle portion of the fibre is heated to soften it, and the tension is allowed to rapidly pull the heated middle fibre portion into a narrow taper and then to separate the fibre to form two fibres with narrowly tapered end portions. One of the fibres with a narrowly tapered fibre end portion can be formed with a rounded end by again applying heat, this time to the tip of the tapered end portion. The tension force is applied by a spring, or possibly a weight, to enable rapid acceleration of one fibre end portion away from the other, with the acceleration and speed limited primarily by the heat applied to the fibre.</p> |
