PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound in high yield under mild condition using an extremely simple and safe process by oxidizing a methoxy-substituted benzene compound using hydrogen peroxide as oxidizing agent and formic acid as a solvent and an oxidation catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A methoxy-substituted p-benzoquinone compound (e.g., 2,3- methoxy-5-methyl-p-benzoquinone) can be produced in one step and high yield by oxidizing a methoxy-substituted benzene compound (e.g., 3,4,5- trimethoxytoluene) with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent and using formic acid as the solvent and the oxidation catalyst. The process does not generate industrial wastes as by-products and is industrially advantageous. The methoxy-substituted benzene compound used as a raw material can be easily produced in high yield by the methylation of phenols and, accordingly, the process is advantageous also from the viewpoint of raw material. |
