PURPOSE:To provide a bright display screen and to allow rewriting of the screen at a high speed by using a liquid crystal panel for polarization control of a double refraction system having high-speed responsiveness for switching of light and a liquid crystal panel for image display of a phase transfer system for image display and combining these two panels. CONSTITUTION:The projected display is made by using the ferroelectric liquid crystal display element constituted of the liquid crystal panel 1 for image display which is sealed with a ferroelectric liquid crystal and is not provided with driving electrodes, the liquid crystal panel 2 for polarization control which is sealed with the ferroelectric liquid crystal and is provided with the driving electrodes, and one sheet of polarizer 9. Namely, this display device is constituted by making up the respective disadvantages of the double refraction type and the phase transfer type and combining the advantages thereof.
