The tool(3) of a machine tool has a tapered shank (1) which fits in the tapered bore (6) of the tool holder (4) or the spindle of the m machine tool. The tapered shank (1) has a collar with an abutment face (Z) which abuts agains the end face (5) of the tool holder (4). The abutment face (2) of the collar has a greater radial width than the abutting end face of the tool holder. The tapered shank (1) of the tool (3) has two circumferential support surfaces (7, 9) which engage circumferential support surfaces (8, 10) in the tapered bore (6) of the tool holder. One pair of surfaces (7, 8) are near the collar (3) whilst the other pair are near the smaller diameter end of the tapered shank. USE - Tool holders for machine tools.
