4-17341/+ Biocatalysts and processes for the manufacture thereof The present invention relates to spherical biocatalysts of high mechanical strength, comprising enzymatically active material, a cationic polyelectrolyte, preferably chitosan, polyvalent anions and silicic acid, and to processes for the manufacture thereof. This application also relates to processes for the conversion of organic substances, e.g. for the manufacture of .alpha.-hydroxycarboxylic acids from .alpha.-ketocarboxylic acids, especially 2-(R)-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid from 2-oxo-4-phenyl-butyric acid, using the biocatalysts of the invention.
