HYDRAULIC SETTLING APPARATUS

The equipment comprises a settling space, liq. feed and clarified water and sludge discharge, to deal with slurry and/or water effluent of iron smelting activities. The settling space is a basin with pref. circular cross section which decreases in the downward direction. It has an outer wall (2b), bottom (2a) and a central downcomer (31). The bottom of the downcomer is set at a distance above the bottom plate (2a). Its top end is extended above the liq. level (V2) of the basin (2). The cross section of the basin decreases more rapidly below the bottom of the downcomer (31). The inlet channel (1) is joined to the downcomer (31), pref. above the liq. level (V2). The outside of the downcomer (31) is joined to a conical inner wall (4) which forms the boundary of the clarified water space (37). The top of this inner wall carries a collector trough (36) with a stilling/level control weir. A divider wall (41) is also located between the downcomer (31) and the inner wall (4). This carries a feed trough (5), also equipped with a level control weir, which is fed from the collector trough (36). Clarified water is removed by a submersible pump (52) located on the side of the divider wall (41) which is opposite the feed trough (5).(Dwg.1/19)
