The mirror is in the form of a thick cylindrical block (1) with a flat front surface (2) which has been covered with a layer of gold, a few microns thick. The mirror reflects the output beam (3) of a 10.6 micron wavelength nitrogen and carbon dioxide laser. The block is built up from three metal elements which are soldered together. The front element (4) is made of molybdenum and has concentric channels (7,8) on its inside face, to carry cooling fluid. The intermediate element (5) is a solid cylinder of invar, while the rear element (6) is made of copper. The copper element is pierced by channels (9,10) for the cooling fluid. The cooling fluid flows from inlet tubes (13,14), through the channels in the front element, and then through manifold jackets (11,12) to the copper block. The fluid then leaves the mirror via outlet tubes (15,16).
|
