PURPOSE: To acquire an alkoxylated product having a narrow molecular weight range by forming a catalyst by reacting a calcium-containing composition having a specified alkalinity with a bivalent or polyvalent metal salt of oxyacid. CONSTITUTION: The calcium-containing composition having a specified alkalinity is prepared by mixing a calcium-containing compd. with an active agent expressed by formula I (X and Y are each oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur or phosphorus, (a) and (b) are each an integer satisfying a valency requirement of X and Y, Q is a positive group or neutral group, Z and Z' are each hydrogen or an org. group hardly inhibiting reaction or solubilization). The calcium-containing composition is reacted with the bivalent or polyvalent metal salt of the oxyacid under a prescribed condition to produce the alkoxylation catalyst. The catalyst is reacted with a alcohol under a prescribed condition to produce a corresponding alcohol deriv.
