A protection chamber for the protection of persons underground is improved in that it can be installed in cramped conditions and is adaptable to a varying number of persons. For this purpose, the chamber housing (1) is constructed as a cylinder and composed of modular wall elements (2,3) which can be joined together, the ends of the chamber being closed by an initial module (7) and an end module (8). The modules may include feet 4 externally, and seats internally. An air supply device (10,12) may be provided. Door 9 and escape hatch 11 are also provided. The chamber is intended as a place of refuge within mine workings. <IMAGE>
