摘要 PURPOSE:To make the damping characteristics of a shock absorber optimally and continuously alterable and thereby make improvements in vehicle's riding comfort by keeping off any transition to a sudden full-close state of an oil passage interconnecting two oil chambers in a cylinder partitioned off by a piston, and adjusting an opening area of the oil passage in succession. CONSTITUTION:An opening area of an oil passage is adjusted by a valve being installed in the oil passage interconnecting two oil chambers partitioned off by a piston to be fitted in a cylinder free of slide motion, and built in this piston. In order to keep the axial displacement of this valve smoothly, sudden interruption of a passage 34 interconnecting both upper and lower chambers 24, 25 is held back, and since an opening area of this passage 34 is continuously adjusted, damping characteristics of a damping force variable type shock absorber 5 are properly alterable according to a duty ratio control signal of an absorber control computer 7, thus vehicle's riding comfort is improved. In addition, since a damping coefficient can be continuously altered to a desired characteristic in a simple structure, reliability and durability in a device in this enhanced.
