PURPOSE:To obtain a simple and safe quick heating device of the intake air of an engine by a method wherein two metal hydrides having different hydrogen equilibrium decomposition pressure from each other are utilized. CONSTITUTION:Metal hydride MH1 is contained in a reactor 4 and metal hydride MH2 is contained in a vessel 7. The hydrogen equilibrium decomposition pressure of the metal hydrides MH1 and MH2 are so selected that the pressure of MH2 is higher than that of MH1 under the atmospheric temperature Tc at the start of an engine 2 and the pressure of MH1 under the intake air temperature Ta in an intake air supply pipe 3 during the normal running is higher than that of MH2 under the temperature near the outside air temperature Tb. At the start of the engine, when a hydrogen flow control valve 7 is open, MH2 releases hydrogen. MH1 stores the hydrogen under the temperature Td and generates heat. During the preparatory process, MH1 is heated by the intake air delivered from a turbocharger 1 in the normal running state and releases hydrogen, which is stored in MH2. After that, the hydrogen flow control valve 6 is closed for preparation of the next starting of the engine. |
