PURPOSE: To obtain the subject fiber homogeneous in the whole range of cross sections of the fiber and excellent in heat resistance and flexibility by dispersing granular silicon carbide in a solution of an organic polymeric material, forming a fiber, thereafter sintering the fiber by heating at a high temperature. CONSTITUTION: This silicon carbide fiber is obtained by bringing (A) an organic polymeric material such as a cellulose derivative or the likes to have 5-60 volume % concentration of the ingredient A to (B) a liquid medium such as water or the likes, adding preferably >=50 volume % (based on the composition) silicon carbide obtained by thermally decomposing chaffs to have preferably <=50 microns maximum size of particles and spinning by a wet method or the likes, thereafter, heating the fiber preferably at a temperature until 500 deg.C to decompose the ingredient A and sintering the fiber preferably at 1,000-2,000 deg.C. |
