A retaining mechanism which comprises a pawl 1 which has at one end a sawtooth-shaped retaining hook 3 which is designed to interact with a locking hook 4, and spring members 6 which interact with the pawl 1 so as to hold the latter in its closed position, can be produced using a very simple design, at the same time as it is possible to carry out initial opening of an associated door, hatch or the like when the retaining hook 3 is freed from the locking hook 4. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the spring members 6 are produced in one piece with the pawl 1 and are mounted on the same side of the pawl 1 together with the retaining hook 3. The free end 7 of the spring members 6 can exert a spring force which on the whole acts in the direction towards the rigid side 8 of the retaining hook 3, in such a manner that the locking hook 4 is secured resiliently between the retaining hook 3 and the free end 7 of the spring. When this engagement is freed, the spring force will act on the locking hook and the associated door, hatch or the like and bring about initial opening. <IMAGE>
