Refractory fibers of amorphous alumina and organic residue.

The refractory fibers consist essentially of amorphous alumina and up to 25 weight percent organic residues based on the total fiber composition. The organic residue can contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen and can be derived from polyvinylpyrrolidone or aluminium formoacetate. The fibers can be transparent and are useful in the manufacture of fireproof consumer fabrics as well as reinforcement of polymeric composites.
