PURPOSE:To improve the preservation property by providing a negative electrode which consists of lithium or a lithium alloy, a nonaqueous electrolyte, and a positive electrode using an active substance which is made by covering the surface of cupric oxide powder with a metal with the ionization tendency larger than that of copper. CONSTITUTION:A negative electrode which consists of lithium or a lithium alloy, a nonaqueous electrolyte, and a positive electrode using an active substance which is made by covering the surface of cupric oxide powder with a metal with the ionization tendency larger than that of copper are provided. As the metal with the ionization tendency larger than that of copper, Al, In, Fe, and the like are available. By covering the surface of the cupric oxide with a metal with the ionization tendency larger than that of copper in such a way, the coverage metal is solved in the electrolyte more than the copper, the solution of the copper can be suppressed, and the rise of the inner resistance owing to the generation of copper membrane on the lithium negative electrode is prevented. And although the coverage metal is solved in the electrolyte to be produced as a membrane on the lithium negative electrode, the coverage metal has a larger ionization tendency than the copper, thereby it is fused easily from the negative electrode, and it can be removed easily by a discharge.
