PURPOSE:To readily obtain the subject compounds useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals and medicines, especially insecticides from industrially readily available raw materials by reducing 2-(3-halogeno-4-alkoxyphenyl)-2- methylpropanols. CONSTITUTION:Compounds expressed by formula I (R is lower alkyl; X is Cl or Br) are reduced, as necessary, in the presence of a base, preferably an alkaline or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, such as NaOH, KOH or Ca(OH)2, using preferably a hydrogenation catalyst, such as Rh, Ru, Re, Pd or Pt, especially Pd as a reduction catalyst to readily afford the objective compounds, expressed by formula II and useful as an intermediate for 3-phenoxybenzyl 2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropyl ether derivatives (insecticides) from the afore- mentioned raw materials industrially and readily available from compounds expressed by formula III (Y is Cl or Br) through a Grignard reagent. |
