PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound at a low cost from a pyrazole compound having a methyl group bonded to pyrazole ring and a substituent bonded to nitrogen atom at the same time by selectively oxidizing only the methyl group of the compound with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a metal compound catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II useful as an intermediate for herbicide can be easily produced in high yield by oxidizing a compound of formula I [Y and Z are H, halogen, NO2, CN, COOR1, NR1R2, CONR1R2, SR1, SO2NR1R2, SO2R3, R3CO, OR4, CHX2, CX3 or especially Y=Z=Cl; A is H, 1-4C alkyl, (substituted) phenyl or pyridyl, OR5 or especially CH3; R1, R2 and R4 are H or 1-10C alkyl; R4 may be (substituted) phenyl, CHF2, CF3 or CF3CH2; R3 and R5 are 1-10C alkyl; X is halogen] with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a metal compound catalyst, preferably a cobalt compound and/or a manganese compound.
