The transport device constitutes a robot making it possible to place various monitoring, maintenance or cleaning appliances inside inaccessible pipes. The module 10 consists of a series of flexible cells constructed from the same material and each consisting of a plurality of separate expansion chambers, positioned about a central axis X, X' and communicating with one another from one cell to the next, so as to form several lines of chambers capable of being deformed independently of one another to deform the module in space, within the available limits of movement. The transport device comprises several modules 10 and several blocking means 12 bearing on the internal walls of the pipe 18. It moves by expansion and contraction of the modules 10 and by blocking and unblocking the blocking means 12. One version of the transport device is provided for moving over planar surfaces. <IMAGE>
