Process for the ring chlorination of aromatic hydrocarbons

Aromatic hydrocarbons which are monosubstituted by straight-chain or branched C1-C12-alkyl or C3-C8-cycloalkyl can be chlorinated on the aromatic ring in the liquid phase in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalysts when cyclic benzo-fused imines are used as cocatalysts. This allows a higher proportion of p-isomers to be obtained.
