A process and an apparatus (10) for the leakproof wrapping of an article with a packaging foil shrinking as a result of the action of heat are described, the article first being surrounded by the packaging foil, subsequently the gap between the article and the packaging foil being selectively evacuated, and thereafter, if appropriate, the packaing foil being welded in such a way that it encloses the article on all sides. The packaging foil is subsequently exposed from outside to a heat by which the packaging foil shrinks and is laid against the article. In order to avoid a water bath and therefore wet work or in order to avoid an IR-radiation source and the risk of damage to the packaging foil possible as a result of this, it is proposed to supply the heat to the packaging foil by means of at least one elastic flexible press body (14, 16) which is pressed against the article enclosed by the packaging foil, in such a way that the article is covered by the flexible press body (14, 16). At least one elastically flexible press body (14, 16) having heating is therefore used as a heat source. <IMAGE>
