The invention relates to a refuse press with an upper refuse-introducing opening with an adjoining refuse-receiving chamber through which a plunger can be displaced which pushes the refuse out through an outlet opening in the refuse-receiving chamber into an adjoining refuse container and presses it. At the outlet opening of the refuse-receiving chamber refuse-retaining elements can be moved in from the side, which elements at least partially cover the outlet opening and prevent refuse which has been pressed from springing back out of the refuse container into the refuse-receiving chamber at the refuse-introducing opening. At the same time, it is provided that the refuse press together with the driving device of the plunger and refuse-retaining flaps be designed such that they form an independent mounted unit with connection parts on the refuse container intended for receiving the pressed refuse, the refuse press as a whole being of a size which is less than the size of a rear-discharge flap of a lorry and is kept at a sufficiently lightweight design in order for it to be raised when a rear-discharge flap is swung up, the refuse plunger being designed to exert a high surface pressure on the refuse.
