Method and apparatus for determining microbiological activities in samples of soil and water

The method for determining microbiological activities in samples of soil and water is characterised in that the samples are mixed with dimethyl sulphoxide under anaerobic conditions. The dimethyl sulphoxide is converted into dimethyl sulphide as a function of the number and the activity of the microorganisms living in the sample. The dimethyl sulphide is measured quantitatively by gas chromatography.
