Flame retardant compositions comprise a polymer and a compound of formula Ar-[CHxBr3-x]n wherein Ar is a phenyl, naphthyl or biphenyl residue; X is 0, 1 or 2; and n is an integer within the range of from 2 to 10, as well as mixtures of these compounds; with the proviso that, in at least two groups -CHxBr3-x, x is 0 or 1. Compounds of formula I wherein X is 0 are new compounds.
