Impregnated cathode has an IrW alloy surface layer formed on a porous pellet impregnated with an alkaline earth metal oxide, the IrW alloy having a crystal structure which has an epsilon-II phase exhibiting an hcp structure whose lattice constants a and c have values of a =2.76-2.78 and c=4.44-4.46. The thickness of the alloy layer is 100- 20000 angstrom. The method for manufacturing an electron tube comprises forming the alloy layer on the surface of the oxide- impregnated pellet; and heat treating in a vacuum or inert atmos. at 1100-1260 deg.C for a period pref.1-360mins.
