PRODUCTION OF POROUS SILICA GLASS

PURPOSE:To enable simple production of porous silica glass which is of high purity and suitable for a catalyst carrier by dipping a silica glass fine powder made in the vapor phase in a liquid, compressing into a preform and heating it at elevated temperature. CONSTITUTION:Fine particles of silica glass are prepared through a vaporphase process and soaked in water or a liquid not corroding the silica glass. The wet silica glass fine particles are compressed into a preform of a prescribed shape and the preform is heated into a porous glass body whereby the objective glass body is obtained. The fine particles of silica glass prepared through the vapor-phase process has high purity as much as 98.5%. It is very efficient if excess amounts of silica glass particles formed in the production if the parent material for optical glass fiber through the VAD process or the outer deposition process is utilized as the particles.
