Photooxidizable dye complexes of the formula (I): X-n [Y+]n (I) where X is a xanthene dye and Y is gegen ion selected from sulfonium, phosphonium, iodonium, pyrylium, hydrazinium, and hydrazide ions; and n is 1 to 2; the complexes are useful as photoinitiators or in photobleachable imaging systems.
