PURPOSE:To reduce the communication quantity and the communication time between a host computer and a terminal unit by transferring in a mutual section a document main body, which is an object in an electronic document group, when it is necessary to handle a document main body at the terminal unit. CONSTITUTION:Directory information to retrieve an electronic document is stored in a document control information storing means 15. A command analyzing means 13 inputs a command and data and analyzes the command from a transmitting and receiving means 12. A document control means 14 refers to the contents of the means 15 based on the command and data from the means 13, controls an input means 17 and an output means 16, controls the electronic document and the directory information and sends the response for the command to a terminal device 20. The means 18 refers to the contents of the means 15 based on the command and data from the means 13, controls the means 18 and the means 16, transfers the directory information and the electronic document between a memory 30 and the means 15 and an external memory 40 and sends the response for the command to the device 20.
