Method for operating a backwashable filter, in which the pressure P1 upstream of and the pressure P2 downstream of the filter are continuously measured and the differential pressure DELTA P is calculated in a computer and is compared with a predetermined differential pressure DELTA P1, the backwashing operation being initiated when the differential pressure DELTA P1 is exceeded and ended after a preset time t2 if the differential pressure is undershot and in which, moreover, after predetermined time periods T1, the backwash operation is initiated, even when the differential pressure has not yet been achieved, the attainment of the differential pressure DELTA P1 being stored during the backwash cycles, and after a predetermined time t3 or after a predetermined number of backwash cycles for the time t4, the backwash operation being blocked if the differential pressure DELTA P1 has not been achieved in the predetermined time and also has not been achieved for the duration of the inspection interval t4 and a display "cloth inspection" is derived. <IMAGE>
