The invention relates to a process for the gas-tight and liquid-tight closure of tubular components. In this arrangement, there is inserted, into the free end of the tubular component, an elastic sealing element which, by means of a press seal, shuts off the interior of the tubular component from the surrounding atmosphere. The characterising feature of the invention is in that a sealing element which is reduced in diameter, by stretching and freezing in the stretching stress, with respect to the internal width of the tubular component is pushed into the interior diameter of said tubular component. After the pushing-in procedure, the sealing element, by virtue of releasing the frozen-in stretching stress, is fixed in its sealing seat on the inner wall of the tubular component via the contact-pressure forces which have become free with the expansion.
