A device for burning out solids and breaking up chemical compounds in a gas stream, in particular to remove soot from exhaust fumes, comprises a basic element (1) made of a refractory material resistant to temperature changes with at least one through channel (2) for the gas stream. The basic element (1) is provided with heating devices which allow temperatures above 1300 DEG C, preferably 1900 DEG C, to be reached and is preferably made of a fibre-reinforced ceramic or pseudoceramic material. In the process for manufacturing the device, the ceramic material is mixed, after inspection or definition, in three fractions with mean particle sizes comprised between less than 0.6 mu m and 4.5 mu m, possibly with reinforcing fibres, After precompression, it undergoes hydraulic pressing with simultaneous sintering at a raised temperature, possibly in a controlled atmosphere. |
