NOSE ASSEMBLY FOR PULLING FASTENERS THROUGH INTERFERENCE FIT HOLES

A nose assembly (1) for pulling fasteners (5, 19) through a workpiece (106, 108) includes an anvil (17) having a conical surface (67) for engaging a complimentary conical surface (71) defined by a set of chuck jaws (63). The chuck jaws (63) include a rear skirted portion (77) defining a recess for receiving a biased support member (89) which prevents the radial collapse of the chuck jaws (63) during actuation of the nose assembly (1). The nose assembly (1) is particularly adapted for gripping a relatively short axially projecting portion (3) of a fastener (5) while ensuring complete engagement of all jaw teeth with the fastener (5).
