<p>A fiber optic switch (10) has a fixed member (16) and a movable member (18) each of which has fiber optics (60, 82, 84) mounted for cantilevered movement with respect thereto. Both of the members (16, 18) are fabricated from borosilicate glass, a material that exhibits a low thermal expansion coefficient, isotropic thermal expansion, closely obeys Hookes Law and is transparent to both visible and ultraviolet radiation. As a result of fabricating the switch members (16, 18) from borosilicate glass, the switch members (16, 18) retain the precise initial fiber alignment over an extended lifetime.</p> |
