Testing engine exhaust purifier at idling speed - by concn. change in injected nitrogen oxide

To test the operation of a catalytic exhaust gas purifier for an IC engine (1), the purifier (3) is first heated to a specific min. temp., pref. by the exhaust gas. When this temp. is reached, the engine is operated at idling speed, while nitrogen oxide is injected at controlled rate, lower than that needed to produce a stochiometric mixt. Downstream of the purifier the residual nitrogen oxide concn. is measured. The result can be used for simple ''yes/no'' acceptance of the purifier, or used for comparison with values measured upstream. USE - For simply and cheaply testing purified efficiency.
