The object of this descender is to provide a safe device which is simple to use and which wears the ropes as little as possible. It has a body (1) comprising two parts, a first in the form of a ring (2) and a second (23) which is solid. The solid part (23) has grooves (3, 4) so that the ropes run with the fewest "breaks" as on pulleys. It also has a hole (18) intended to receive a karabiner hooked to the climbing harness of the mountaineer so as to prevent any loss in the event of clumsy handling. <IMAGE>
