PURPOSE:To carry out the adjustment of the backlash between a drive pinion and a ring gear with stable accuracy, automatize the adjustment, lower an assembling cost and improve reliability by clamping one of the adjust nuts of a differential case in the direction of engaging the ring gear with the drive pinion to a defined load and then loosening same by a defined quantity and, after that, clamping the other adjust nut. CONSTITUTION:Slide frames 13L, 13R are moved close to a carrier 1 by driving a motor, and their respective engaging portions 23 are engaged with adjust nuts 4A, 4B which are screwed into the carrier 1. A nut runner 15 on an adjusting head HD(L) side is rotated in the direction of loosening the adjust nut 48 by the engaging portion 23. After that, by rotating a nut runner 15 on an adjusting head HD(R) side, the adjust nut 4A on the installing side of a ring gear 3A is fastened to a defined quantity of load. Then, by driving a cylinder 28 on the adjust head HD(R) side, a female engaging portion is moved to a male engaging plate side to engage both and, by driving a loosening cylinder 29, the adjust nut 4A is loosened by a defined quantity. After that, the adjust nut 48 on the opposite side is fastened to a defined torque, to complete the adjusting operation.
