<p>A rotary beater 1 for use in the suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner comprises a rotatable shaft 4 provided with at least one flexible blade 5 comprising a base material 6 of rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer and a covering material 7 of plastics having wear resistance and relatively low co-efficient of friction, the latter being located on that side of the blade which in use comes into contact with the surface being cleaned.
