PRODUCTION OF OPTICALLY ACTIVE 2-HALOBUTANOIC ACID

PURPOSE:To obtain optically active 3-halobutanoic acid of high purity easily by effecting asymmetric hydrolysis of racemic 2-halobutanoic acid ester using cultured cell bodies of a specific microorganism. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism having esterase activity in Candida or Trigonopsis such as Candida utilis IFO 0396, is cultured in a liquid medium, and the cultured cell bodies are mixed with 0.1 to 30wt.% of racemic 2-halo- butanoic acid ester and the asymmetric hydrolysis is conducted pH-2 to 9 0 to 60 deg.C for 1 to 50 hours.
