Disclosed is a method of making a tri- or tetrahydrocarbylammonium hexahydroxyantimonate, [R3R'N]Sb(OH)6.xH2O formula (1) containing 3 to 30 C atoms, which process comprises the steps of (1) contacting a compound selected from R3N and R4NOH with the H+ form of a solid cation exchange resin, and allowing the amine or the tetrahydrocarbylammonium hydroxide to react with the cation exchange resin, and thereafter (2) contacting the reacted resin with an aqueous solution of KSb(OH)6, wherein each R contains 1-10 C atoms and is independently selected from alkyl, aralkyl and alkylaralkyl, R' is H or R, and wherein x is an indeterminate number of moles of H2O.
